Setanta Setters Brood Matrons
The heart of Setanta. It has often been said that a kennel is only as good as its breeding stock. The purpose of my breeding program is to develop a strong Dual purpose bloodline. This means keeping female puppies back, and occasionally adding blood through the purchase of a puppy from another breeder or buying an adult female.
When planning a breeding, in selecting a stud dog, I look for the qualities that will improve upon the female in the areas she is lacking in. I believe that a strong pedigree is very important, as well as the qualities such as temperament, and natural ability. The quality of the stud dog both in the home and the field are very important to me. Health and Confirmation of the stud dog are very high on my list of requirements’ also.
When I keep females back the selection is made according to a pedigree and then by evaluating the temperament and look of the entire litter. Since all my litters are raised in my dining room I have ample time to evaluate the entire litter. If the litter meets my expectations I will keep pick of the litter but I am not always sure this matters, unless for example, the puppy in question exhibits a flaw in confirmation such as light of bone, incorrect markings etc., then that puppy is considered a pet quality puppy and is placed with a spay/neuter contract.
